What is IV Sedation?
IV sedation is a safe, effective form of conscious sedation delivered through a small needle in your arm or hand. Unlike general anesthesia, you remain able to breathe on your own and respond to verbal cues, but you’ll be in a deeply relaxed state with no awareness of the procedure.
IV sedation is ideal for:
- Patients with dental anxiety or phobia
- Complex or lengthy procedures (wisdom teeth removal, multiple extractions, dental implants)
- Patients with a strong gag reflex
- Those who have had traumatic dental experiences
- Patients who want to complete multiple procedures in one visit
- Anyone seeking maximum comfort during treatment
Dr. Azzouni is extensively trained in sedation dentistry and continuously monitors your vital signs throughout the procedure to ensure your safety and comfort.

Why Choose Dr. Azzouni for Your IV Sedation
What to Expect with IV Sedation
Before Your Procedure
No food or drink for 6-8 hours before your appointment (nothing after midnight for morning appointments). Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you to and from your appointment. Wear comfortable clothing. Take regular medications as instructed (Dr. Azzouni will review your medications during consultation).
During the Procedure
A small IV catheter is placed in your arm or hand. Sedation medication is administered—you’ll feel relaxed within seconds. Dr. Azzouni continuously monitors your breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure. You’ll remain in a “twilight” state—comfortable and unaware of the procedure. The procedure is completed while you rest peacefully.
After the Procedure
You’ll rest in our recovery area for 15-30 minutes as the sedation wears off. You may feel drowsy or groggy for a few hours. Your companion will drive you home. Rest for the remainder of the day. Most patients don’t remember the drive home and have zero memory of the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions About IV Sedation
Frequently Asked Questions About Wisdom Teeth Removal
Is IV Sedation Safe?
YES. IV sedation is extremely safe when administered by a trained oral surgeon like Dr. Azzouni.
How much does IV sedation cost?
IV sedation typically costs $400-$600 in addition to the cost of your procedure. The exact cost depends on the length and complexity of your treatment. We’ll provide a detailed cost estimate during your consultation.
Will I be unconscious with IV sedation?
No, you won’t be unconscious. IV sedation creates a state of deep relaxation where you remain able to breathe on your own and respond to instructions, but you’ll have no memory of the procedure and no awareness of time passing. If complete unconsciousness is needed, general anesthesia in a hospital or surgical center would be recommended.
How long does it take to recover from IV sedation?
The sedation medication wears off within 30-60 minutes after your procedure, but you’ll feel groggy for several hours. Plan to rest at home for the remainder of the day. Most patients feel back to normal by the next morning. You cannot drive, operate machinery, or make important decisions for 24 hours.
Can anyone have IV sedation?
Most healthy adults and adolescents are candidates for IV sedation. Dr. Azzouni will review your medical history, current medications, and any allergies during your consultation. Certain conditions like uncontrolled high blood pressure, severe lung disease, or pregnancy may require alternative sedation options. Be sure to disclose all medical information for your safety.
What if I wake up during the procedure?
Dr. Azzouni continuously adjusts your sedation level throughout the procedure to ensure you remain comfortable. If you begin to stir or show signs of awareness, additional medication is immediately administered. However, even if you briefly become partially aware, you won’t feel pain (local anesthesia numbs the area) and you won’t remember it.
